Maine, the northeasternmost state in the United States, is known for its rocky coastline, maritime history, and natural areas such as Acadia National Park's granite and spruce islands. Moose abound in Baxter State Park, which is home to Mt. Katahdin, the Appalachian Trail's northern terminus. The coast is dotted with lighthouses, such as the candy-striped beacon at West Quoddy Head, as well as lobster shacks and sandy beaches like Ogunquit and Old Orchard.
